The Blackfriar Today

The Blackfriar is one of a kind, not only in the Square Mile but anywhere in England. The building date is not exactly known, but multiple sources have it around 1875 and that’s good enough for me. The addition of the finest example of turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau design in London was remodelled c1905 & 1917 by H Fuller Clark, architect, & Frederick Callcott & Henry Poole, sculptors.

The plaque on the wall of the Blackfriars says it was going to be demolished in 1960’s, but public outcry led by Sir John Betjeman & Lady Dartmouth. This is a story in itself.
