I wonder if Pepys would have approved, it was certainly customary to have the 'morning draft' but none would have been anything like this modern fashionable venue. Tucked away down Strew Lane off Upper Thames Street the tsp, as it advertises itself, is well worth a visit.

There are only two pubs which offer views of the Thames from the City side, perhaps this has something to do with an Order of the Star Chamber issued on 6th November 1633, that no tavern sign may face the river 'having regard that loose persons, bankrupts and such as are otherwise obnoxious may privately resort thither, and likewise shift away and withdraw themselves from the justice of the realm'.

I recommend visiting tsp early in the week when the sun is out and enjoying a lovely cool lager or perhaps one of the excellently kept beers relaxing in the comfortable sofas or perhaps is you are very lucky the small balcony overlooking the Thames. Food is available and is good value, there is plenty of room and you don't feel out of place simply having a drink.
