Lovely bit of tradition hidden in Masons Avenue which runs between Basinghall St. and Coleman St.  The original was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, so this dates back to after 1666. The latest refurbishment was in 2002 by Shepherd Neame the current owners. They have kept the look and feel of a traditional pub which dates back to the 17th century. There are plenty of good pints to be pulled, Spitfire, Bombardier and of course, the Bishops Finger.

Doctor William Butler was born on 1535 in Ipswich, physician to James I, invented a medicated ale which, he claimed, who ever drank his purging pint of medicinal ale would be rejuvenated.  Dr Butler set up a number of taverns in the City, he lived to ripe old age of 83 years, so it's probably not hard to see why his medicinal ale sold well.
