Lovely bit of tradition hidden away down between the City buildings. The orginal was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666, so this dates back to after 1666. The latest refurbishment was in 2002 by Shepherd Neame the current owners. They have kept the look and feel of a traditional pub which dates back to the 17th century. There are plenty of good pints to be pulled (Spitfire) although they don't sell the Doctor Butler's purging pint of medicinal ale. This is the last pub to bear the 'Doctor's Head' which allowed them to sell the medicinal ale created by William Butler. Dr. Butler was born on 1535 in Ipswich, he lived to ripe old age of 83years, so it's probably not hard to see why his medicinal ale was a good seller.
